Step 1
Determine the size of the flowerbed area. Measure total square feet or estimate the size of the garden when completely planted and in bloom.
Step 2
Decide on what type of weed mat barrier will best suite the needs of the project. Some use mulches, whether organic or plastic. These alternatives also allow for rainwater to pass more effectively.
Step 3
Remove as much debris and weeds as possible from the flowerbed site. Use hand cultivators or walk behind tillers if the area is relatively small. Any project over half an acre should be professionally cleared of all weeds.
Step 4
Use environmentally-friendly, organic weed control mats to help soil conditions. Some weed mats have pesticides and herbicides imbedded in them that leach into the soil and into the water table. Organic mats simply kill weeds underneath them and actually condition the soil favorably.
Step 5
Arrange the matting in and around existing plants that will be kept. Do not cover any exposed bulbs or root balls to prevent damage to the plant.
Step 6
Stake each corner of the mat once it has been placed, cut and smoothed out over the area to be weeded. Continue placing stakes at 1-foot intervals to firmly affix the weed mat.

Step 1
1. First you need to decide where you want you new flower bed to be. After you have made this decision you need to decide if you want to use perennials or annuals and look to see how much sun or shade this area gets.
Step 2
2. Take a garden hose and use it to map out your bed. Then take a shovel or edger tool and edge the side of the bed using the garden hose as your guide. If this area is part of your lawn and has grass on it then you can take a flat or square ended shovel and remove the layer of grass. Depending on if you have good soil or not, or if you want your bed to be higher than ground level you may need to add some top soil to your site.
Step 3
3. Go to your local garden center and choose what plants you would like to have in it. Remember to keep in mind the height and width of the plants you are looking at. The employees at the garden center should be able to offer you some advice so just show them your drawing. Decide what type of ground cover you want to use and what type of border edging you are going to use or if you are going with a natural edge.
Step 4
4. Once you have chosen your plants and your bed is ready, place your plants out in the bed where you think you want them. This will give you an idea of how they are going to look and can space them out before you dig.
Step 5
5. Next take out your old newspaper. Layer the newspaper at least two to three sheets thick and overlap them as you go. Work in sections and dig the holes and plant the plants as you go. This way you can cover the ground around the plant well with newspaper so weeds will not squeeze through. You can hold the newspaper down with a light layer of the ground cover you have chosen.
Step 6
6. When you have everything the way the you want it finish off your project with a thick layer of your ground cover material and border of you choice. Trim back any remaining newspaper and sit back and enjoy the beauty of your hard work.
